INTERFACE

conceived by Calvin Dutton

designed by Brittany Vasta

InterFace is an interactive public art installation piece inspired by carnival cut outs, also known as ‘comic foregrounds’. The fun and humor of these engaging pieces springs from the incongruous pairing of the participant’s face with whatever body and/or scene is depicted on the surface. Calvin Dutton approached me during the pandemic (remotely!) to collaborate on a contemporary version of the cut out that could celebrate Black Lives & Black Joy, while inviting participation and dialogue in a tangible, physical way with the New York city community. We chose to reference a well known and still timely comic strip, adding speech and thought bubbles with chalk and erasers to invite passers by to add not only their faces, but also their voices. For the first month of its presence in NYC, we moved it once a week to different neighborhoods in the city. It currently resides on the corner of Classon Ave and Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn.

This first installment of InterFace is the launching pad for Calvin’s new activist art organization, ActiveGroundz.
